Not Going To University? Know Your Options
Thursday, May 4, 2017
Sir Richard Branson, Jamie Oliver and Lord Alan Sugar all left school at the age of 16. Not having a degree didn’t stop them – so why should it stop you
Should I go to University?
While some careers require a degree, such as medicine, there are plenty that don’t.
Whilst doing a degree may demonstrate a certain level of academic achievement it is not always the best route to a dream job in the highly competitive industry of makeup where a vocationally focused course represents a more effective route to employment.
Tamsin Barbosa Vice Principal at The Iver Makeup Academy: “Don’t panic if you don’t get your grades to get into your chosen Media makeup degree. It is easy to panic when your plans go wrong but realistically this is not the end of the world. A lot of creative careers don’t require a university degree and the majority of makeup and hair artists did not go to university.
For the media makeup and hair industry a vocational option is a better choice. The training you receive on a degree course in Media makeup can be inadequate and may not reflect the true needs of the industry. The graduates are coming out without some of the core basic skills and therefore not getting the jobs they have waited years to begin.
We have had one student come to us after doing 2 years on one of the top media makeup degree courses and within 2 weeks with us she was using equipment and learning techniques she had not seen before. She has now graduated from us and in a recent conversation with her was talking through her dilemma of which job to accept next.
“Plenty of successful people don’t go to university and a lot of creative careers don’t actually require university degrees. For the hair and makeup industry in particular vocational options are actually a better choice.”
