Bring Horror to Life: Train in Advanced Prosthetics and Special Effects at Iver Makeup Academy

So many of our graduates and tutors have gone on to create the kind of horror looks that stick with you long after the credits roll.

Our alumni have helped bring to life terrifying creatures, eerie characters and mind-blowing prosthetics on productions like Penny Dreadful, The Conjuring, Doctor Who, The Witcher, and even the Alien franchise. It’s a reminder that what starts in our classrooms and studios often ends up thrilling audiences around the world.

The skills our students learn — from crafting wounds that make you wince to designing full prosthetic pieces— are the same ones used every day on professional film and TV sets.

Our Prosthetics and Special Effects courses give students the opportunity to explore the more technical and creative side of makeup. From sculpting and moulding to casting and on-skin application, these courses are designed to teach the full process of transformation.

Students learn how to create believable injuries, age effects, and fantastical designs that stand up to the scrutiny of HD cameras and studio lighting — skills that are essential for working in film, television, and theatre.

One of our standout modules is the Further Prosthetics Makeup FX Course — a 3-week, course designed for those who want to focus specifically on-screen prosthetics. It’s delivered by industry professionals such as Stuart Bray, James Adams, Renata Gilbert, Jess Heath and Sarah-Jane Pucci who alternate between teaching and working on set, ensuring the techniques taught remain current and relevant.

Throughout the 3 weeks, you would learn techniques for creating detailed replicas of body parts, sculpting intricate prosthetic pieces using industry standard materials, producing durable moulds to replicate prosthetics pieces. Safely and effectively applying prosthetics as well as understanding industry standards for continuity, maintenance and troubleshooting during live productions.

The next start dates for the Further Prosthetics Course are 10th November 2025, 16th March 2026, 6th July 2026 & 16th November 2026. This module is also included as part of the larger Advanced Certificate in Makeup & Hair artistry course for those enrolled in the full-time programme.

All materials, tools and prosthetic supplies are included in the cost of the Further Prosthetics Course, so students can focus fully on learning.

After your course ends, IMA supports graduates via the IMA Agency, helping you find relevant work experience and industry placements aligned to your prosthetic & SFX skills.

If the idea of working on screen prosthetics, creature buildouts or high impact SFX appeals to you, the Further Prosthetics Makeup FX Course is designed for it. Start dates are approaching – we recommend securing your place early.

Also keep an eye on our Instagram and TikTok channels where we’ll be sharing student portfolio pieces, behind the scenes of IMA Tutors and Graduates as well as current prosthetic projects.
