Higher Education vs. Specialised Training: What’s Best for You?

Maybe you’re not getting the grades you hoped for and that might feel like a setback, but it could be the start of a thrilling new chapter. If makeup and hair artistry is your calling, The Iver Makeup Academy is here to help you turn your passion into a career you love, without having the grades.

We often get asked about the differences between studying at a university and pursuing industry based, vocational training. To provide insight, we spoke with Megan Feltham, a graduate of both a university studying BA (Hons) Makeup and Hair Design and The Iver Makeup Academy completing the Advanced Certificate in Makeup and Hair Artistry, to hear her perspective on both pathways.

We asked Megan the questions you want answers too!

What made you want to work in the make and hair industry?

“I always loved film and wanted to be a part of it in some way. I went on a school trip to the Harry Potter studios and remember being shown the prosthetics used in the movies and listening to a talk about the makeup team and new that was the area I wanted to go into”.

What did you find were the main differences in the structure of the courses at university versus private training?

“My university course was quite broad with 3 different modules each term. We would have hair or makeup-based modules, but they also wanted to teach us other skills like photography or more theory-based studies as well.  IMA’s industry based training was far more focused on the practical skills with the intention of us all becoming makeup artists when we finished”.

Our courses focus on practical, hands-on training to prepare you for a career in the industry. You’ll develop core skills and advanced techniques, including special effects, using professional and have a clear understanding of the job roles you will be applying for , while building valuable experience throughout your learning journey”

How did the balance between theory and practical work differ in your university studies compared to The Iver Makeup Academy?

The Advanced Makeup and Hair Artistry Course I completed at IMA was far more practical than anything I did at university. My uni curriculum  covered a lot of the same topics, but it wasn’t anywhere near as in depth or hands on. I managed to find an old timetable from my second year, and it shows I only spent 14 hours a week in university and half of those were for lectures/ seminars”.

What was the pace of learning like at The Iver compared to university? Did one feel more intensive or hands-on?

“I think because university was spread over 3 years with other modules going on at the same time it wasn’t possible for it to feel as focused of a learning experience as The Iver”.

Which specific skills or techniques did you feel were emphasised more studying privately compared to university?

“For me it wasn’t specific skills but generally being taught things in a way that was relevant to the industry. Being shown how to create looks for a lead role vs background or how you would quickly fix something on set”.

“At The Iver Makeup Academy, you’ll be guided and taught by Makeup Designers who’ve worked on globally renowned productions. These mentors bring a wealth of experience, providing you with insider knowledge and practical skills to thrive in the industry”

How did your confidence level change after completing your education at IMA versus university?

“I felt a lot more confident after finishing my course at the Iver as I had been better prepared for working in the industry”.

In terms of creativity and innovation, did one institution encourage you to explore your artistry more than the other?

“I think my university course encouraged students to take a very different approach to a brief”.

Your time at The Iver Makeup Academy will be spent creating a standout portfolio that highlights your skills and vision. This portfolio is your key to impressing potential employers, whether your dream is working on blockbuster films, hit TV shows, or fashion editorials.

How did The Iver prepare you for the realities of the industry compared to your university course?

“My university course went through applying for jobs with us and creating our own websites/social medias, but the Iver went more in depth with breaking down the responsibilities of a trainee and generally better preparing me for what to expect on set. The industry ready section of the course was extremely helpful in teaching me what to expect when I was actually working in Film/TV/Theatre”.

Were there differences in how university and The Iver approached feedback and assessments of your work?

“Feedback was more ongoing in class at the Iver than at university where it was usually given at the end of each module. Smaller class sizes and more practise in class meant I was given feedback/help if I was struggling so I could improve as I was working”.

Did you feel one institution provided more direct pathways into the makeup industry? Why?

“Yes, straight after finishing at IMA I had work due to their connections and IMA agency. I also have a huge network of makeup artists in all the graduates from the Iver. It’s great to turn up to a job and realise you are working with another Iver graduate”.

One of the greatest benefits of studying at IMA is the supportive community. You’ll connect with like-minded creatives who share your passion, building friendships and professional networks that could shape your future career.

How did your mindset or goals as a makeup artist evolve after completing The Iver compared to your time at university?

“I think my goals just seemed more achievable after training at the Iver. It felt like everything we learnt was for ‘when’ we work in the industry not ‘if’”.

What projects have you worked on since leaving The Iver Makeup Academy?

“I only left the Iver a few months ago but have been working on a variety of projects. Most jobs I have done have led to something else which is really encouraging”.

What advice would you give to potential students who are exploring all their options?

“If you’re passionate about a career as a Makeup Artist  and you feel ready to start your career, IMA’s courses are a great way to prepare yourself for the industry and get working as soon as you graduate”.
